April 21, 2010 – SEC Seminar and Dinner Meeting

Single Angle Design Manual

Presenter: Whitney McNulty, PE, SECB

When you design single angles for bending do you ever use the principal axis provisions?  Do you know that you have to if you are dealing with unequal leg angles that are laterally unbraced?  Have you ever tried to perform a principal axis bending analysis and wondered where to find all of the section properties?  What about shear?  Are you just considering the vertical shear in the vertical leg?  Do you know about the torsional shear in most single angle lintels?  The newly written Single Angle Design Manual, by Whitney McNulty, PE, answers all of these questions and more.  Mr. McNulty will discuss how the design manual can help you to design single angles for tension, compression, shear and bending, including geometric axis and principal axis bending.  He will also explain how to use the Excel spreadsheets (available for free download from the SEC website) written to accompany the book.

About the Speaker:

Mr. McNulty is a Senior Associate and Senior Project Structural Engineer at Fletcher-Thompson, Inc. in Shelton, CT.  He has over 24 years of experience as a structural engineer and is licensed as a professional engineer in Connecticut and New York.  He is a member of the Connecticut Structural Engineers’ Coalition and has served on its Emergency Response Group and Peer Review Guidelines committees.  Mr. McNulty received his B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from Louisiana State University and a Masters Degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Connecticut.  He wrote the Single Angle Design Manual in his spare time to consolidate into one reference all of the material necessary to properly design these frequently used structural members.
One copy of the Single Angle Design Manual is included in the cost for the first attendee from each firm only.  Additional books can be purchased if desired.  Please note quantity of additional books on registration form.
